What are three great landscaping plants that aren’t used often enough?

We asked horticulturist Bruce Neary if he could name a few and tell us why. Here is what he said:

Oak Leaf Hydrangea
“It blooms most of the summer with showy white flowers. Adaptable to sun or shade. No real pest problems. Great fall color.”

Shrub Rose
“Highly disease resistant. Foliage remains clean and new-looking throughout the year. Blooms from mid-summer to Thanksgiving.”

Summersweet
“Adaptable to wet sites. Fragrant flowers in the summer. Attracts butterflies and hummingbirds. It’s a really great plant. “

Bruce Neary has a Bachelor of Science degree from Rutgers University as well as a Masters of Agriculture from Texas A&M University. Bruce is also an instructor here at the Rutgers Office of Continuing Professional Education.

Plants featured in your posting should be displayed with their binomial scientific names. Common names often vary with regions.

That’s a good point, Larry. We’ll try to start doing that.
